What Do You Look At? What Do You Use?
>> Friday, February 4, 2011
I'm referring to the web, of course. I wonder what sites you consult on a regular basis, and perhaps what applications you use to assist in this process. A long list would be tedious and no doubt counter-productive, but - who knows? - you and I might find or learn something to our advantage!
Here are a few of my favourite things:
Two Applications
https://www.readability.com/bookmarklets/
If you often read longish articles on the web, or even shorter ones come to that, you will find Readability a real boon. It rids the web page of all advertisements and distractions. Extremely easy to use. I'm surprised the press puts up with it!

- Apture Highlights
Once you have installed this little application, you can highlight (select) any word or phrase on any web page including blogs and gain instant access to a wealth of information in a non-obtrusive manner. Unfortunately, Apture only works in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Does anyone still use Internet Explorer?!
Three websites
- George Orwell's War Diaries
Each entry is posted on the web 70 years to the day after the original date.
- Art Project
Never set foot inside an art museum again, except in pursuit of brownie points!
- Google Fast Flip
Pick the newspapers and magazines which interest you and off you go.
